About five million people living with HIV, or 15% of the total HIV-positive population, are co-infected with hepatitis C, and Southeast Asia and Africa have larger numbers of co-infected individuals than other regions. However, effective hepatitis C treatments are often inaccessible in resource-limited settings due to prohibitively high costs. TREAT Asia’s policy brief, Hepatitis C and HIV: Addressing the Dual Epidemic, provides detailed information about the impact HIV/hepatitis C co-infection has on an individual’s health and about the regional and global impact of the dual epidemic.
