The fact that HIV can be transmitted during sexual contact, pregnancy, or breastfeeding intrinsically links the HIV epidemic to sexual and reproductive health. Yet governments do not consistently integrate sexual and reproductive health services into their national HIV strategies or adhere to international frameworks set forth to protect and promote the reproductive health of women living with HIV (WLHIV). As a result, the sexual and reproductive health rights of WLHIV in Asia have not yet been fully realized, and studies show that they are regularly denied healthcare, not informed of their reproductive options, and even forced or coerced into having sterilization procedures or abortions because of their HIV status.
This report seeks to inform policy makers, community advocates, and healthcare providers about the rights violations WLHIV face, the negative impact this has on efforts to achieve HIV prevention and treatment goals, and the ways in which stakeholders can work together to protect the sexual and reproductive health rights of WLHIV.
