amfAR’s Dr. Annette Sohn Featured in South China Morning Post

In an article in the South China Morning Post, the influential English language Hong Kong daily newspaper, Dr. Annette Sohn, an amfAR vice president and director of the TREAT Asia program, addresses the alarming increase in HIV-related deaths among adolescents.

According to the United Nations, while there has been a 28 percent decrease in HIV-related deaths among adults in the Asia-Pacific region since 2005, there has been a 110 percent increase among adolescents. The article also cites a World Health Organization report noting that adolescents are the only group of people living with HIV with a rising mortality rate, and that HIV has become the second leading cause of death among adolescents worldwide.

Dr. Sohn discusses these “very concerning statistics” and describes TREAT Asia’s Youth ACATA (Asia Community for AIDS Treatment and Advocacy) program, which was launched last year.
