TREAT Asia at the 2015 IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention

The eighth annual International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention is taking place in Vancouver, Canada, July 19–22. The event, held every other year, is the largest open scientific conference on HIV/AIDS, and it is expected to attract over 6,000 delegates from around the world, including several TREAT Asia network members.

“The IAS Pathogenesis conference is a great opportunity for learning about the latest advances and controversies in HIV prevention and care, and for networking with partners, colleagues, and friends,” says Dr. Nicolas Durier, TREAT Asia’s director of research. “TREAT Asia Network members from across the region will attend, and we’re all excited to convene in Vancouver.”

TREAT Asia and amfAR staff and network research partners will participate in multiple presentations and panels. Highlights are listed below:

Monday, July 20

• TREAT Asia Network member Dr. Thanyawee Puthanakit, from HIV-NAT in Bangkok, will give a presentation titled Comorbidities in Children and Adolescents at the 8:15 a.m. Plenary Session.

• The TREAT Asia Network study “Treatment and Resistance Outcomes of Asian Children on Second-Line Antiretroviral Therapy” will be presented at the 11:00 a.m. Paediatrics: Growing Up on ART session.

• A poster describing amfAR’s new PEPFAR country operational plan database, titled “Changing PEPFAR Priorities and Variability: An Assessment of PEPFAR COP Allocations and Country Variability,” will be displayed in the Poster Exhibition Area from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
  
• A panel on the Trans Pacific Partnership featuring amfAR Senior Research Advisor Brian Honermann will accompany a 7:00 p.m. screening of the documentary Fire in the Blood at the Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver.

Tuesday, July 21

• A poster on the Australian HIV Observational Database study “Regimen Switching and Virological Response in Treatment Experienced HIV+ Patients Receiving an Integrase Inhibitor-Based Regimen: An Australian Cohort Study” will be displayed in the Poster Exhibition Area from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

• The TREAT Asia Network study “Transmission Networks of HIV-1 Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in East and Southeast Asia” will be presented during a poster discussion at the 1:00 p.m. Clusters, Clades, and Cultures session.  

Wednesday, July 22

• A poster describing a study conducted by TREAT Asia research partners from the BJ Medical Center–Johns Hopkins University collaboration entitled “Sociodemographic Barriers Affecting Adherence to HAART Among Elderly Patients at a Tertiary Care Centre in India” will be displayed in the Poster Exhibition Area from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.  

• amfAR’s Brian Honermann will present on “The PEPFAR COPs Allocation Database: A Comprehensive Database to Monitor PEPFAR Spending, Increase Data Transparency, and Improve Civil Society Engagement in Country Operational Plans” at the 2:00 p.m. Implementation and Measurement to Improve Health Systems session.
