In the United States

Approximately one in four people living with HIV in the United States are women. One in nine of them are unaware of their status.
Adult and adolescent women accounted for 19% of new HIV diagnoses in 2018. Of these, 85% were attributed to heterosexual sex and 15% to injection drug use.
The number of annual HIV diagnoses in women declined 7% from 2014 to 2018. New HIV diagnoses declined 10% among African-American women and 9% among Latinas, but increased 15% among white women. New HIV diagnoses declined among women of all ages except in those over 55; in that age group the rate of new diagnoses increased 5%.
Among all women diagnosed with HIV in 2018, 57% were African American, 21% were white, and 18% were Hispanic/Latina.

Around the Globe

In 2019, an estimated 19.2 million women were living with HIV, constituting more than half of all adults aged 15 and over living with HIV.
About 48% of the estimated 1.7 million new HIV infections in adults globally were among women and girls in 2019.
Every week, approximately 5,500 young women aged 15–24 years become newly infected with HIV.
In sub-Saharan Africa, five in six new infections among adolescents aged 15–19 years are among girls—young women aged 15–24 years are twice as likely to be living with HIV than men.
More than one in three women globally have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence by a non-partner. In some regions, women who have experienced violence are 50% more likely to acquire HIV than women who have not experienced such violence in their lives.
In 2019, around 85% of pregnant women living with HIV had access to antiretroviral medicines to prevent the transmission of HIV to their children.
