amfAR Urges U.S. Congress to Affirm Human Rights Regardless of Sexual Orientation

NEW YORK (March 23, 2010)—amfAR has joined nearly 50 other organizations in urging Congress to condemn Uganda’s “Anti-Homosexuality Bill” and to affirm the human rights of all people regardless of sexual orientation.

In separate letters to U.S. Senators and Representatives, the organizations urge Congress to support Senate Resolution 409 and House Resolution 1064. According to the letter, the resolutions “call upon the President and Secretary of State to impress upon the Ugandan Government the universality of human rights, regardless of sexual orientation; to express unequivocal U.S. opposition to the ‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2009’; and to ensure that resources committed to the fight against HIV are utilized effectively, targeting affected populations reflected by local epidemiology of the disease.”

The resolutions were introduced in the House on February 3 and in the Senate on February 4.

Signatories to the letters include the American Public Health Association, Global AIDS Alliance, Human Rights Campaign, National Association of Social Workers, National Minority AIDS Council, and Physicians for Human Rights.
