Lives on the Line: The Human Impact of Proposed Cuts to Global HIV Funding
The Trump Administration’s proposed
budget for Fiscal Year 2019 would slash
funding for HIV treatment and services
under the President’s Emergency Plan
for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) by $800
million – over a 17% decrease. This
substantial cut could result in over a
million people experiencing HIV
treatment disruptions, leading to tens of
thousands of preventable AIDS-related
deaths for adults and children. And since
people living with HIV who are on
treatment are 96% less likely to pass
HIV on to their partners, reducing access
to treatment would lead to a rise in new
HIV infections that would severely
undermine progress on curbing the
global HIV/AIDS epidemic.
