New Chief for Malaysian AIDS Council

Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman 
February 2006—Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman has been appointed president of the Malaysian AIDS Council, succeeding Marina Mahathir, who held the influential post for more than a dozen years. Dr. Adeeba is head of the infectious diseases unit at the University of Malaya Medical Center in Kuala Lumpur, one of TREAT Asia's participating sites, and was recently named chair of the TREAT Asia Steering Committee. After obtaining her medical education in Australia, Dr. Adeeba returned to Malaysia in 1996 and set up one of the first infectious diseases units in the country. Her involvement with HIV/AIDS also includes leadership of the Malaysian Harm Reduction Working Group, which advocates for HIV prevention and care for injecting drug users.
