amfAR Policy and Medical Advisor Blumenthal Named Health Leader of the Year

NEW YORK, June 4, 2009—Susan J. Blumenthal, M.D., M.P.A., senior policy and medical advisor for amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, received the 2009 Health Leader of the Year Award on Wednesday from the Commissioned Officers Association of the U.S. Public Health Service for her leadership on women’s health, HIV/AIDS, and other issues.

Blumenthal, a former assistant U.S. surgeon general who last month chaired a landmark Capitol Hill conference on HIV/AIDS co-sponsored by amfAR and Research!America, was recognized by the commission for her lifetime achievements in raising awareness about public health and supporting medical research.
“Dr. Blumenthal has been instrumental in expanding amfAR’s presence in Washington, and her leadership on HIV/AIDS has helped bring together many of the key stakeholders on the issue,” said amfAR CEO Kevin Robert Frost. “We look forward to continuing to work with her as we help the Administration and Congress craft and implement a comprehensive, evidence-based national AIDS strategy.”
In addition to serving as an amfAR advisor, Blumenthal is director of the Health and Medicine Program at the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, where she leads its Commission on Charting New Directions. She is also chair of the Global Health Program at the Meridian International Center and a clinical professor at Georgetown and Tufts Schools of Medicine.
