National AIDS Policy Nominee Must Move Swiftly on National AIDS Strategy

NEW YORK, February 26, 2009 – The appointment by President Obama of Jeffrey Crowley as head of the National AIDS Policy Office sends a hopeful signal that the new administration is serious about curbing the spread of HIV, said Kevin Robert Frost, CEO of amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research in a statement released today.

“Mr. Crowley’s appointment provides an opportunity for the incoming administration to move forward quickly on the development and implementation of the national AIDS strategy that we so desperately need,” said Frost.

A Senior Research Scholar at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute and a Senior Scholar at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, Georgetown University Law Center, Jeffrey Crowley has solid credentials in public health, health policy development, and HIV/AIDS. His primary areas of expertise are Medicaid policy, including Medicaid prescription drug policies; Medicare policy; and consumer education and training. As the Deputy Executive Director for Programs at the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA), Mr. Crowley helped implement several key initiatives including the National HIV Testing Day Campaign and the Ryan White National Youth Conference.

As head of the National AIDS Policy Office, Mr. Crowley will play a leading role in implementing an HIV/AIDS plan that will expand research efforts and address the stubbornly high rates of HIV infection that persist in the U.S.  Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention increased its estimate of the annual incidence of HIV infection by 40 percent.
