Why Has Asia Fallen Behind
on HIV/AIDS?
Our global successes in reaching nearly 20
million people with antiretroviral treatment
(ART) reflect the impact of programs such
as the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for
AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund
to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
These programs have invested billions of
dollars in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention
in the hardest hit countries, many of which
are in East and Southern Africa.
However, it is increasingly clear that the
Asia-Pacific region has fallen behind Africa
in its HIV/AIDS response, and that children,
women, and men in the Asia-Pacific have
less access to lifesaving treatment and
prevention interventions.
The stagnation we see in HIV program
coverage in the Asia-Pacific is a reminder
to governments, civil society, and donors
that much more needs to be done to bring
HIV/AIDS under control in the region.
