amfAR Featured in Washington Post Live's "Pathways to Progress: Combating the HIV/AIDS Epidemic"

The Washington Post convened some of the country’s top health officials, practitioners, thought leaders and advocates on December 5 for a discussion about the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis in America. The program, “Pathways to Progress: Combating the HIV/AIDS Epidemic,” was live-streamed on Washington Post Live. Speakers discussed the latest scientific and medical advances in HIV/AIDS; explored the challenges faced by policymakers and advocates who are calling for more HIV/AIDS research, funding and outreach; and took a deep dive into the HIV/AIDS epidemic sweeping America’s Southern states.

The lineup of notable speakers included Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Dr. Deborah Birx, Ambassador-at-Large and Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State; Black AIDS Institute President and CEO Phill Wilson; AIDS United President and CEO Jesse Milan, Jr.; and Congressswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.). Grammy Award-winning music legend and longtime amfAR supporter Dionne Warwick also discussed her decades-long advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS, and her personal connections to the epidemic.

amfAR Vice President and Director of Public Policy Greg Millett participated in a panel that explored the HIV epidemic in the South, where states are experiencing high rates of new diagnoses. Alongside Linda Villarosa, program director of journalism and assistant professor at The City College of New York, and Dr. Michael Saag, director of the Center for AIDS Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Millett discussed how to target existing resources and properly allocate funds to hard-hit states.
