D’Adda, Giovanna Battaglia, and Livia Firth were among those who came out to La
Permanente last night for amfAR Milano, the Foundation’s fourth annual benefit
held in conjunction with Milan Fashion Week. Sharon Stone chaired
the event, along with Silvia Venturini Fendi, Lapo
Elkann, Milutin Gatsby, Christophe Navarre, and amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole.
The evening raised more than $1.1 million for AIDS research.
The
black-tie gala was held at La Permanente and featured a cocktail reception,
dinner and memorable performances by fashion industry favorites Theophilus
London and Anna Calvi.
Kenneth Cole took the stage to acknowledge the fashion community for
their longstanding support. In the 26 years since amfAR’s founding, Cole said,
“close to 30 million people have died of AIDS. Even though that number is
staggering, because of AIDS research, millions more lives have been saved.”
Sharon
Stone displayed her auctioneer prowess during the evening’s high-energy live
auction. Highlights included:
- Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared² donated a handmade, one-of-a-kind
outfit of their own design, worn at the event by model Jessica Stam, that
included a Swarovski crystal-encrusted white dress and glittering shoes, cuffs,
earrings, and necklace.
- An etching by Damien Hirst, one of the most prominent artists of
his generation, sold for €110,000.
- Seminal photographer Chrisopher Makos donated an image of amfAR
founder Dame Elizabeth Taylor on a motorcycle. The signed print, capturing Dame Elizabeth’s
playful spirit and unparalleled star power, fetched €30,000.
- Moët Hennessy donated a gold-leaf Mathusalem of Moët & Chandon
Impérial, handcrafted by Arthus-Bertrand. The 6-liter bottle was sold once and
immediately donated back to amfAR to be auctioned off again, raising a total of
€30,000.
- A very rare portrait of Andy Warhol, from Karen Bystedt’s “The
Lost Warhols” Collection, sold for €50,000.
- A limited edition Louis Vuitton vanity case, designed by Sharon
Stone, sold for €70,000. Sharon Stone
partnered with Louis Vuitton in 2000 to create the special line of vanity cases
with all proceeds to be donated to amfAR.
Over the years these cases have raised $4 million for AIDS research.
- A one-of-a-kind sofa designed by STUDIO 65 for GUFRAM and crafted
especially for amfAR Milano sold for €35,000 to Roberto Cavalli. The iconic “lips” sofa design was
re-interpreted for the first time in 40 years by Italian artist Letizia
Cariello.
- Famed DJ, musician, and producer Mark Ronson added an impromptu DJ
lesson.
amfAR
Milano was presented by Moët Hennessy and hotel partner Westin Palace Milano.
Fendi O’ presented the official amfAR Milano after-party at La Permanente,
which featured DJ sets by Mark Ronson and Mia Moretti.
Through
the years, the Italian fashion community has been exemplary in its support of
amfAR, with fashion houses and designers underwriting and leading many of the
Foundation’s most successful fundraising efforts. Since amfAR’s first
international benefit, held in 1993 during the Cannes Film Festival and hosted
by amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor, the
Foundation’s international galas in Milan, New York, Cannes, Venice, Rome, and
Dubai have become some of the most high-profile and eagerly anticipated charity
events in the world and have helped raise millions for critical AIDS research
programs.
