The staff at amfAR join our friends and colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco, in mourning the loss of Dr. Teri Liegler, who recently lost an 18-month battle with cancer. Dr. Liegler was a professor in the Division of HIV, ID and Global Medicine at UCSF, and a founding member of the leadership team as director of the basic research core at the amfAR Institute for HIV Cure Research.
A national leader in virology and laboratory science, Dr. Liegler had been dedicated to the fight against AIDS since her time as a postdoctoral fellow at the Gladstone Institute under the tutelage of Dr. Warner Greene in the early days of the epidemic. As Director of the UCSF-Gladstone Center for AIDS Research Virology Core, she pioneered methods for detection of HIV and drug resistance. She was a lead investigator on iPrEx, the groundbreaking study that revealed treating HIV-negative persons prophylactically was effective and safe in humans, leading to dramatic reductions in HIV incidence.
“Teri was an immensely talented scientist and a humble and generous colleague,” said Dr. Rowena Johnston, amfAR vice president and director of research. “She possessed a deep personal warmth and kindness that endeared her to everyone she worked with. She will be greatly missed by us all.”
